Crisis of Trust
The mysterious letter struck like a bombshell, shattering the calm of Xiao Sheng’s heart without warning. Inside were several blurry yet highly suggestive photographs. They depicted Yan Xiaonian in an intimate conversation with a stranger on a street corner. Though their faces were obscured, the man’s slight lean toward her and the faint, ambiguous smile on Yan Xiaonian’s face were enough to sow seeds of doubt in Xiao Sheng’s mind, seeds that began to spread wildly within him.
Xiao Sheng’s expression darkened as if a storm were brewing. He gripped the letter so tightly his knuckles turned white and the veins on the back of his hands protruded. His heart was a tumult of conflicting emotions. Since joining hands with Yan Xiaonian, they had braved countless storms together. Their memories of leaning on each other and offering mutual support flashed through his mind like a film. He had never imagined a day of such suspicion would come, yet the evidence before him made it impossible to dismiss, and the edifice of their trust began to crumble.
That evening, Yan Xiaonian returned to the Xiao residence as usual. The moment she stepped through the door, she keenly sensed an atmosphere so heavy it felt as if it might freeze over. Xiao Sheng sat on the sofa, his eyes cold and piercing as he stared at her, as if he were a different person. He slapped the letter onto the table, the sharp sound breaking the deathly silence of the house and shattering Yan Xiaonian’s joy at being home.
"Xiaonian, what is the meaning of this?" Xiao Sheng struggled to suppress his rage, yet his voice trembled—a manifestation of anger and heartache intertwined, like a taut violin string ready to snap at any moment.
Filled with confusion, Yan Xiaonian picked up the letter. Upon seeing its contents, her eyes widened in shock and grievance, and her eyes instantly welled up with tears. "Sheng, this is a misunderstanding! I don't even know this person!" Her voice was choked with tears as she desperately sought to prove her innocence.
"A misunderstanding? The photos are clear as day. How do you expect me to believe you?" Xiao Sheng stood up abruptly, his tall frame radiating an oppressive air as he stepped toward her, each stride feeling like a blow to her heart.
Yan Xiaonian stumbled backward, her steps unsteady, tears swirling in her eyes as she defended herself urgently. "I went to a charity event that day. Someone asked for directions on the way. Perhaps the angle makes it look… Sheng, you know me! How could I ever betray you?" Her hair was slightly disheveled, and the strands on her forehead were dampened by tears, clinging to her cheeks in a pitiful sight.
However, the fire of jealousy and suspicion in Xiao Sheng’s heart was already raging, burning his reason into scattered ashes like a candle in the wind. He let out a cold hum. "A charity event? It’s always charity. Who knows if you’re using that as a cover..." He regretted the words the moment they left his lips, but they could not be taken back. Yan Xiaonian’s face turned deathly pale, as if all the blood had been drained from her, and her body trembled slightly.
"You actually think of me that way..." Yan Xiaonian choked out, tears streaming down her face. She turned and ran upstairs, locking herself in her room. From within came the sound of stifled sobs, each one like a sharp blade piercing Xiao Sheng’s heart.
In the days that followed, the Xiao residence seemed shrouded in a gloomy haze. The two remained silent when they crossed paths, and if their gazes ever met, they would instantly look away. The love they once shared had vanished in the face of suspicion. Xiao Sheng busied himself with business, trying to numb his inner torment, yet late at night, the image of Yan Xiaonian’s aggrieved face would involuntarily surface in his mind. Yan Xiaonian threw herself into her charity work, but the loneliness in her eyes grew more apparent, and her smiles no longer reached them.
At a business gala, amidst the dazzling lights and the rustle of fine clothes, the superficial luxury could not hide the undercurrents moving beneath the surface. Su Yao, a scheming woman from the Lin family, seized the opportunity and sashayed over to Xiao Sheng’s side. Her makeup was exquisite, yet her eyes held a cunning glint. She spoke with feigned concern: "Mr. Xiao, I heard there’s been some trouble at home? Sigh, women… sometimes you really have to keep a tighter leash on them." Xiao Sheng’s anger flared instantly, yet he suppressed it; he knew the Lin family was looking for a spectacle, but their words stung like needles in his heart.
Seeing Xiao Sheng’s dark expression, Su Yao felt a surge of secret delight, though she continued with a mask of understanding: "Mr. Xiao, you are so outstanding; it’s inevitable that some people won’t cherish you. If you’re tired, why not loosen the strings a bit? Don’t take things so seriously." She raised her hand slightly, seemingly by accident, and brushed against his sleeve, her fingertips lingering with an ambiguous touch.
Xiao Sheng frowned slightly and moved aside without a word, fully aware of her intentions. Yet, he was so consumed by the conflict with Yan Xiaonian that he felt drained and had no energy for anything else.
Returning home, Xiao Sheng found Yan Xiaonian sitting alone on a garden bench. Bathed in moonlight, she looked exceptionally lonely, as if abandoned by the world. His heart softened, and just as he was about to speak, Yan Xiaonian spoke first: "Xiao Sheng, if you truly distrust me this much, what is the point of us being together?" Xiao Sheng froze. He knew their relationship was on the verge of collapse; if he didn't mend it, the sweetness of their past would vanish into thin air. But how could the cracks of suspicion be repaired? He was lost in deep bewilderment, gazing at the moon in the night sky, filled with melancholy, not knowing which way to turn.
