Chapter Fifteen: Liu Yan: Why I Refuse to Tear Up My Chinese Passport
Page 1/3
Zhang Fan stared coldly at the image of Liu Yan on his phone.
“Not bad, I’m the one who reported them. What are you going to do about it?”
“Weren’t you posting on your social circle that you tore up your Chinese passport and ID, and renounced your Chinese citizenship at the embassy?”
“And you applied for political asylum, meaning you can never return to China. You’re now stateless, and you still want to sue me?”
Liu Yan looked at Zhang Fan’s disdainful expression, her face twisting with fury.
“Zhang Fan! Just you wait!”
“Once I get my U.S. green card, I’ll sue you as an American citizen!”
“What are you bragging about? Don’t think I don’t know that the seven million settlement money came from your buddy Zhao Tiezhu! And as for you, you’re still just that lousy food delivery guy!”
“Wait until the court forcibly transfers all your houses, cars, and savings to my parents. You won’t be having a good time!”
“By then, I’ll make sure you lose everything!”
Zhang Fan sneered and hung up the video call.
I have tens of billions—what do you mean, I’ll lose everything?
No matter what messages Liu Yan sent, he ignored them all.
Only when Liu Yan stopped messaging did he reply with two words:
“Idiot.”
Fuming, Liu Yan grabbed an art piece from the bedside table, raising it to smash in a fit of rage.
But then, thinking of how expensive these things were and her precarious situation, she reluctantly put it back.
“Damn Zhang Fan, damn him to hell!”
“Once I become an American citizen, I’ll use every means to sue you!”
At the door, John walked in.
Liu Yan quickly put on a facade of calm and smiled, though inside she was nearly bursting with frustration.
She coyly linked arms with John.
“Darling, when are we going to finish the last step for the green card? And about our wedding!”
“I’ve already renounced my Chinese citizenship just to marry you.”
“You can’t keep me waiting—I’m feeling so insecure right now.”
John smiled and nodded.
“Yan, don’t worry, I won’t treat you badly.”
“You’re the most beautiful Chinese girl I’ve ever seen.”
“Tomorrow, I’ll take you to finish the last bit of paperwork.”
Liu Yan felt an overwhelming excitement.
Tomorrow?
Wonderful!
As long as tomorrow comes, I can become a naturalized American and get my green card.
I’ll be a true American citizen!
Zhang Fan, this is your last day to be arrogant.
Once I have legal status, you’ll regret it!
John’s tone shifted.
“But, Yan, I have a small request.”
“I hope you won’t refuse me.”
Seeing his expression, Liu Yan knew exactly what kind of request it was.
Men are all the same!
As long as it pleases them and keeps them hooked, they’d give their lives for it.
Without hesitation, Liu Yan replied,
“Darling, say it!”

“As long as it’s within my ability, I’m willing to do anything.”
She struck a seductive pose, sitting on the bed with a gleam in her eyes.
John grew more excited, holding Liu Yan and looking seriously into her eyes.
“Really, anything?”
“Of course, darling. I love you.”
“Good, then I’ll invite some of my black friends over, and I’ll watch while you’re with them. How about that?”
“What did you say?!”
Liu Yan was stunned, her heart twitching uncontrollably.
She could hardly believe those words had come out of John’s mouth.
They had met online five years ago, and to Liu Yan, John had always seemed high-class.
He claimed to be a surgeon earning over $800,000 a year.
Specializing in heart bypass, microvascular and nerve suturing surgeries—each operation netting tens of thousands of dollars.
Such a respectable career and income made him a clear wealthy man in Liu Yan’s eyes.
And he appeared to be a very decent man in daily life.
Yet now, he was making such a request.
Liu Yan was utterly shocked, staring dumbfounded at John.
John furrowed his brow.
“Yan, didn’t you say you’d do anything for me?”
“In your Chinese way of speaking, I’m a bit into cuckolding.”
“Don’t you love me? Is this such a small request that you can’t accept?”
Liu Yan was still too stunned to respond.
Seeing her silence, John feigned disappointment and smiled bitterly.
“Well then, I won’t force you.”
“I’ll refund all the medical expenses you paid.”
“You should just go back to China.”
His last words jolted Liu Yan out of her shock.
Go back to China?
I’ve already torn up my Chinese passport and ID.
On the day I landed in America, I went to the embassy and renounced my Chinese citizenship.
How could I possibly go back?
Not to mention whether customs would let me through; even buying a ticket legally is impossible.
Unless I get American citizenship or a green card.
In short, I must prove my identity is legally recognized by some country.
Liu Yan finally felt a pang of regret.
She instinctively reached for her phone to call Zhang Fan, hoping he could help her.
As her ex-husband, one of the few who hadn’t blocked her, he might be the only person who could assist.
But just as she picked up the phone, her heart and body trembled.
No!
No way!
I want to be American!
I’ll never go back to being Chinese!
Besides, I’ve already fallen out with most of my social circle back home.
If I go back now, won’t I just be a laughingstock?
Everyone will treat me like a joke!

No matter what the cost, as long as I can stay legally in the U.S., that’s the best.
With that thought, Liu Yan quickly clung to John’s arm.
She forced a smile that looked strained.
“No, darling, I love you!”
“I said I’d do anything for you, so if you have this kind of request, I’ll of course fulfill it.”
John glanced at Liu Yan, feigning ecstatic joy.
“Really?”
“Good, I’ll call now!”
Liu Yan watched John pacing in the living room, excitedly chatting with several friends, a chill running through her heart.
...
Zhang Fan threw Liu Yan’s parents out the door, staring at their terrified eyes as he spoke word by word.
“Let me be clear with you now.”
“You can sue or call the police all you want.”
“But if you dare to harass my mother again, sorry—it won’t just be a beating like today.”
“Even if I’m sentenced to death, I will kill you. Understand?”
His words, eyes, and expression swept over the elderly couple like a cold wind.
Mr. Liu no longer dared to speak, battered and bruised.
Mrs. Liu helped her husband, limping into the elevator and glaring at Zhang Fan.
“A food delivery guy? You really are just a lousy food delivery guy!”
“That’s all you’ll ever be!”
“My daughter is a genuine American now, so much better than you!”
“Once she settles down there and sponsors us through family immigration, you’ll still be stuck delivering food in China!”
Zhang Fan sneered.
“Is that so?”
“Whether your daughter can even survive in the U.S. is still up in the air.”
“Talking to me like this is useless; time will prove everything.”
With that, Zhang Fan slammed the door.
Mrs. Liu’s face turned deathly pale as she ranted like a madwoman inside the elevator.
She cursed about “my daughter is already American, and you still dare to act high and mighty” and “I’ll find a way to seize your house, car, and savings,” and so on.
Mr. Liu covered his injured face and sighed.
“Alright, wife, don’t waste your anger on this brute.”
“Didn’t our daughter say that John, the American, is very rich?”
“Hmph, once she gets settled, we’ll do fine too. Then Zhang Fan will only be able to watch our social circle posts with envy!”
The couple helped each other and left, their minds filled with dreams of a better life once their daughter brought them to America.
Zhang Fan cooked for his mother and, at school dismissal time, immediately went to pick up Zhang Qingyun.
Luxury cars clustered outside the school gates.
As Zhang Fan stepped down, a young man in a suit loudly confronted him.
“You must be Zhang Fan, right? Your daughter is Zhang Qingyun?”
“Is she the one who punched Ye Xiu in the face?”
