At dusk, a servant came to the east wing to report to Chen Jianchen that someone was looking for him. When Chen Jianchen went out to see, it turned out to be Wang Fu. Having previously received a letter from Chen Jianchen, Wang Fu already knew where Hu Manor was and took the opportunity during his free time to come and visit.

Seeing the grand and splendid estate, Wang Fu was full of admiration. He said, “Liuxian, no wonder you were willing to stay here as a tutor. I’ve heard that Hu Manor is one of the most prominent families in Suzhou. Master Huangfu is a man of immense wealth, controlling both legal and illicit affairs—truly a formidable figure in the region.”

His implication was clear: by becoming the tutor to Miss Huangfu, Chen Jianchen had climbed onto a mighty tree, one that offered abundant shade and countless benefits.

In life, knowledge is vast, but connections are paramount. Yet, Wang Fu had also heard many unsavory tales about Miss Huangfu and wondered how Chen Jianchen could possibly endure her.

Since Chen Jianchen was residing at Hu Manor, it was improper to receive Wang Fu in the main hall, so he intended to bring him into the east wing for conversation. Just as they stepped into the courtyard, they saw Lu Xiyue coming out.

“Oh! This is...” In Jiangzhou, Wang Fu had only caught sight of Lu Xiyue once or twice from afar. He never expected to meet her here and was both surprised and delighted, momentarily at a loss for words.

Lu Xiyue greeted Chen Jianchen with profound respect and asked, “Young Master, have you received a guest?”

Chen Jianchen introduced Wang Fu, and Lu Xiyue bowed to him before leading the handmaiden Xianger away.

Only then did Wang Fu recover from his astonishment and excitedly say, “Liuxian, isn’t she Miss Lu from the Bird-Watching Pavilion? How is she here? Do you know each other?”

Chen Jianchen replied calmly, “That’s a long story.” He then led Wang Fu into the east wing and asked, “Brother Futai, you’ll be returning to Jiangzhou soon, won’t you?”

Wang Fu snapped back to reality and answered, “Yes, once I finish all business matters, I’ll set out early the day after tomorrow.” Seeing the satisfied smile on his face, it was clear that not only the business but other matters were settled as well. Chen Jianchen teased, “I thought Brother Futai would be so enchanted by the spring waters of the Suzhou River that you’d never want to leave.”

Wang Fu laughed heartily, unable to hide his pride. “The spring waters of Suzhou River... Liuxian, your words are truly elegant and refined. Such poetry! If you had been there that night, I’m sure the ladies would have given you a 30% discount!”

Chen Jianchen was speechless but knew well that some talented scholars could roll in the courtesans’ quarters on the strength of their poetry alone, exchanging verses for a night’s stay—a fact that others found endlessly fascinating.

“Brother Futai, I actually wanted to find you because I have something to entrust,” Chen Jianchen said.

Wang Fu responded with a hearty slap on his chest, “Liuxian, whatever you say, just speak. If it’s within my power, I will do it without hesitation.”

Chen Jianchen then cautiously spoke of Lu Xiyue’s situation, suggesting that Wang Fu accompany her on the way back for mutual support.

Upon hearing this, Wang Fu slapped his thigh with excitement, eyes shining as he looked at Chen Jianchen. “Liuxian, you’re truly brilliant. Quiet and mysterious, you’ve managed to connect with Jiangzhou’s foremost courtesan!”

Chen Jianchen retorted, “What do you mean by ‘connect’?”

Wang Fu sighed, “It’s maddening comparing people. My few days of flirtation can’t compare to your exploits, Liuxian.”

Realizing he was getting carried away, Chen Jianchen cleared his throat and said, “Brother Futai, it’s not like what you imagine.”

Wang Fu waved dismissively. “I understand. Some things are best left unsaid. Liuxian, you don’t know—only the capable can get Lu to play a tune at the Bird-Watching Pavilion. Many wealthy young men throw money for a night’s pleasure but fail because Lu is truly chaste. She performs but never yields. If the nobles knew she’d chosen Liuxian as her gentleman, they’d be stomping their feet in envy.”

Chen Jianchen’s heart suddenly tightened. Though Wang Fu’s words were playful, they carried an unspoken warning.

Noticing Chen Jianchen’s changed expression, Wang Fu quickly reassured him, “Don’t worry, from now on, I’ll regard Lu as my sister-in-law and treat her with due respect.”

Marrying a courtesan, especially a renowned one, as a concubine was a common trend among the scholarly elite. Wang Fu naturally assumed Chen Jianchen’s feelings for Lu Xiyue had deepened and that their relationship was normal. Yet Chen Jianchen was displeased with others commenting on Lu Xiyue.

Not wanting to linger on the topic, Chen Jianchen asked, “Have you decided on the route back?”

Wang Fu sighed deeply and wore a troubled look. “We’ll have to take a different path back to Jiangzhou.”

“Oh? Why?”

Wang Fu said angrily, “Because of that damned blue snake.”

“A blue snake?” Chen Jianchen’s heart stirred. “Has that huge snake appeared to block the road again?”

Wang Fu grimaced. “Not only has it appeared, but it has eaten people. Two hunters who went to the government to report and slay it were swallowed whole.”

“Since then, the blue snake has become even more ferocious, haunting the mountains and forests. It bites anyone, man or beast, on sight. Now, no one dares to venture within miles of that canyon.”

Chen Jianchen was moved. “Such a vicious beast?”

“Exactly. The snake disaster is severe. The government sent 300 soldiers with weapons to hunt it down, but these soldiers, who usually bully the common folk, were terrified at the sight of the giant serpent. They fled down the mountain screaming. Since then, no soldiers have dared to go out again.”

Chen Jianchen raised an eyebrow. “Troops are maintained for emergencies. The state’s purpose in raising soldiers is to stabilize the country and protect the peopleI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
