Volume One: Menial Worker in Changshui County Chapter 86: Your Life is Forfeit
Just a kick from an ordinary servant was certainly no threat to Yuan Wufeng. Yet the act itself, though lacking in real harm, was deeply humiliating.
“Who hit me?” Yuan Wufeng was furious.
A group of menials, whom he viewed as mere ants, actually dared to lay hands on him amidst the chaos.
Bang! Amid the turmoil, someone slapped Yuan Wufeng across the face.
Just as Yuan Wufeng prepared to retaliate, four or five fists and black-clad feet appeared all at once around him.
He hadn’t even had a chance to react before being thoroughly beaten.
Thanks to the defensive strength of his martial body at the eighth rank, these blows caused him no pain at all.
But Yuan Wufeng was absolutely livid.
“Bastards!” He roared in anger, his aura flaring violently.
The servants around him were instantly thrown back, but there were simply too many people. Those who had been knocked away vanished immediately into the crowd.
“You dare lay hands on me? Rebelling, are you!” Yuan Wufeng cursed, “Don’t let me find out who it was—otherwise I’ll kill you, and make your entire family follow you to the grave.”
Having spat out these threats, Yuan Wufeng was about to plunge deeper into the crowd to search for those he’d just injured, when he suddenly felt a cold chill on his back.
Turning around, he saw the two eighth-rank martial artists from Nanwu County closing in.
“Director Bai, what is the meaning of this?” Yuan Wufeng ignored the servants who had just attacked him, instead questioning Nanwu County’s Deputy Director.
“Director Yuan, you misunderstand. We merely wish to exchange pointers, to gauge the strength of the Demon Slayer Division of Changshui County,” Director Bai replied with a cold smile, encircling Yuan Wufeng.
The other eighth-rank Demon Slayer from Nanwu County also rapidly drew closer.
For a moment, Yuan Wufeng sensed trouble.
“If this is simply a friendly match, why must two eighth-rank martial artists face me alone?” Yuan Wufeng retreated a few steps, ready to make a run for it at any moment.
“Director Yuan, you jest—only I approached you. Where is there anyone else?” Director Bai sneered, continuing his advance.
Normally, Yuan Wufeng would already have unleashed a string of curses.
But in this situation, he dared not act rashly. “Perhaps I was mistaken. But Director Bai, is there some misunderstanding between us? Director Zhong and your county’s Director Song have their disagreements, but that’s all Zhong’s problem—it has nothing to do with me.”

“Oh? Is that so? Then how do you view Director Zhong?” Director Bai asked with a smile.
“Director Zhong is decent enough, though somewhat arrogant. The Demon Slayer Division of Changshui County has never matched up to Nanwu County—why would he oppose Director Song? He brought this trouble on himself!” Yuan Wufeng hurried to say something favorable, belittling Zhong Zhengming while extolling Nanwu County's Director Song.
Yet this did nothing to halt Bai’s advance.
“I’ll give you another chance. Say it again,” Director Bai pressed.
“Yes, yes, I was wrong. Zhong Zhengming is a hypocrite—upright on the surface, but a villain underneath.” Yuan Wufeng even slandered Zhong Zhengming, eager to curry favor with the people of Nanwu County.
“I’ve heard that Changshui County produces stalwart men, each full of vigor. But today, it seems such talk is just hearsay. Changshui County is nothing special, not to mention compared to us in Nanwu County. In all of Anxi Prefecture, you’re no more than bottom of the barrel,” Director Bai laughed loudly.
Before so many servants from Changshui County, Yuan Wufeng betrayed his own side and slandered Zhong Zhengming, giving Director Bai an indescribable sense of satisfaction.
“Director Bai, that’s their dispute—it has nothing to do with me. I actually quite like Nanwu County,” Yuan Wufeng added. “Perhaps you should order everyone to stop. Internal strife won’t help the demon eradication.”
Even a fool could see that Nanwu County had instigated this incident.
Especially Director Bai—just one word from him and the brawl would end.
Slandering Zhong Zhengming was nothing; afterward, Yuan Wufeng could apologize and claim he was looking at the bigger picture, worried that impulsiveness would hinder the demon hunt.
At worst, he’d be scolded.
But if a conflict broke out now, he truly couldn’t guarantee he could handle two eighth-rank martial artists.
He’d surely be badly injured.
Yuan Wufeng could distinguish between being scolded and being crippled.
“I’ve never seen someone so shameless.”
“Yuan Wufeng, don’t drag us down with you.”
“Yuan Wufeng, if I survive this, I’ll dig up your ancestors’ graves!”
…
The servants of Changshui County were so enraged by his words that they nearly spat blood.
They were fighting at the front, only to find Yuan Wufeng betraying them at the critical moment!
“Endure a moment, and the storm will pass.”
Yuan Wufeng, unconcerned with the others, focused only on self-preservation. “You’re all far too impulsive. If you ruin the mission, what will you do then?”
The Changshui County servants ground their teeth in fury at his words.
There was nothing they could do; Yuan Wufeng’s position was unique—anyone who tried to ambush him would be spotted immediately.
“Hahaha, shameless wretch, these servants have more backbone than you!”

Director Bai publicly humiliated Yuan Wufeng.
Yet Yuan Wufeng showed no embarrassment, continuing to grin shamelessly. “Shameless or not, I only know that survival is the true principle.”
“If Director Bai wishes to hear me curse Zhong Zhengming again, just say the word.”
Yuan Wufeng pushed his shamelessness to the limit.
“Heh. Even if you don’t slander Zhong Zhengming, do you think you’ll make it out alive?” Director Bai had already closed in, his expression turning cold.
“What do you mean?” Yuan Wufeng was startled.
“No special meaning—just that now you’re close enough, it’s time to take your life!”
In a flash, Director Bai struck suddenly.
The eighth-rank Demon Slayer from Nanwu County joined in.
Damn it!
They actually wanted him dead!
Yuan Wufeng was so terrified he turned to flee.
He’d thought at worst he’d be beaten—he hadn’t expected it would escalate to life and death.
Panicked, Yuan Wufeng unleashed the full speed of his eighth-rank martial arts.
In the blink of an eye, he was ten meters away.
Just as he prepared to run further, four or five ninth-rank martial artists appeared before him.
Though these ninth-rank fighters weren’t his match, they could stall him for a moment.
If the two eighth-rank Demon Slayers from Nanwu County caught up, it would be certain death.
“Old Bai, what is this supposed to mean?” Yuan Wufeng fought the four or five ninth-rank martial artists from Nanwu County, all the while questioning Director Bai behind him.
“It means exactly that—I want your life!” Director Bai sneered. “Today, you won’t escape!”
In another instant, Director Bai and the other eighth-rank martial artist closed in.
Their fists and feet collided with explosive force.
Within a few exchanges, Yuan Wufeng took a heavy punch and staggered, nearly collapsing to the ground.
