Chapter 85: Eavesdropping!

Watching the women glare at each other, their eyes wide with tension, Wang Zheng felt a foreboding, as if a storm was about to break. Chu Jun’s temperament was relatively mild—at least, she behaved like a good girl in front of Wang Zheng. But when Su Xue and Bai Bing were together, it was certain to be a clash of titans.
“Brother, who are you buying the car for?” Su Xue fixed her gaze on Wang Zheng, interrogating him, clearly unwilling to let this opportunity slip away.
Hearing Su Xue’s question, Wang Zheng thought quickly. If he said he was buying it for Bai Bing… Well, it wasn’t actually for her. If he claimed Bai Bing forced him to buy it, another round of arguments would be inevitable. But if he said he was buying it for himself, no one would object. Yes, that was the answer!
Having settled on his reply, Wang Zheng looked at Su Xue and said, “Of course, I’m buying the car for myself!”
Su Xue eyed him suspiciously, puzzled by his hesitation to respond immediately, so she asked again, her tone full of doubt, “Really?”
“Of course!” Wang Zheng affirmed. “You know how hot it’s getting—walking from home to the office leaves me drenched in sweat.”
“You spent eight years in Africa—are you really afraid of the sun in Jinghua? Is Jinghua hotter than Africa?” Su Xue retorted.
“It’s not the sun I fear, it’s the exhaust fumes in Jinghua!” Wang Zheng replied, all while reaching behind his back to signal something to Bai Bing.
Bai Bing immediately understood, her smile blossoming like spring. She brought more egg tarts from the kitchen and set them on the dining table.
“Don’t just stand there, everyone—eat while they’re warm! They won’t taste as good cold!”
This matter had nothing to do with Chu Jun. Besides, last night’s dinner was a working meal, so her stomach was empty and she was famished. Seeing delicious food, she naturally wouldn’t miss out. Still, as a lady, she feigned restraint for a moment before sitting at the table, gently tugging at Su Xue’s sleeve.
Su Xue was in the same situation as Chu Jun. After hearing Wang Zheng’s answer, although she remained skeptical, she couldn’t keep up the confrontation all morning. Feeling Chu Jun tug at her sleeve, she seized the chance to sit down. But determined not to let the “female spy,” the “white fox,” have her way, Su Xue continued, “Brother, if you’re buying a car, get one with four seats. That way, we can all go on weekend trips together. Absolutely don’t buy a sports car, okay? Otherwise, it’ll just become a show-off’s toy!”
“Of course. With the traffic this bad, even if I wanted a sports car, it wouldn’t get anywhere, right?” Seeing the brewing storm dissolve, Wang Zheng was happy to agree with Su Xue. As far as he was concerned, as long as they didn’t argue in front of him, he didn’t care what happened when he wasn’t around—even if it turned into a brawl!
Thanks to the lavish breakfast and the little drama between Su Xue and Bai Bing, Wang Zheng ended up late for work. Yet, at this point, it seemed no one at Zhongtian cared whether he was punctual.
He greeted the familiar female employees as he passed by. When he walked past Lin Xiaolei’s office, someone happened to leave. Wang Zheng didn’t repeat yesterday’s trick of barging in, but glanced inside. Seeing Lin Xiaolei in discussion with others, he finally entered his own office.
As soon as he walked in, Bai Bing picked up a cup, pressed it against the wall adjoining Lin Xiaolei’s office, and listened quietly through the glass. Wang Zheng, meanwhile, idly flipped through a magazine, waiting for Bai Bing to report what she overheard.

There was nothing Bai Bing could do now but obey him, even going out of her way to please Wang Zheng. Only by doing so could she hasten the process of buying the car. After all, Wang Zheng had only agreed to the idea, not set a date. If he procrastinated for a year or more, Bai Bing couldn’t bear it!
Five minutes passed, but Bai Bing’s eavesdropping was still not finished—it must have been an important meeting. Taking advantage of the time, Wang Zheng turned on his computer. Glancing at Bai Bing still listening intently, he tapped the keyboard and sent an email. Half a minute later, a new message arrived; Wang Zheng opened it, checked it, then deleted it.
Having servants was a blessing—there was nothing he needed to worry about; a simple notification and anything could be handled.
Half an hour later, Bai Bing finally finished listening, putting down the glass and rubbing her ears. For her to sit so quietly for over thirty minutes was a miracle in itself!
“Any new intel, Agent Bai?” Wang Zheng asked, though his gaze remained fixed on the images on his computer screen. Artistic nudes—Wang Zheng was indulging in a cultural education.
“Lin Xiaolei has officially decided the company’s future direction—real estate! She’s ordered the staff to start gathering information on the real estate sector. As for specific projects, Lin Xiaolei needs to consult further with Huang Wei and Liu Jin. That’s the gist of it,” Bai Bing replied.
“They met for half an hour, and you summed it up in less than thirty seconds?” Wang Zheng asked.
“That’s my summary of their meeting. If you want to hear all the pointless chatter, I don’t mind talking your ear off for half an hour,” Bai Bing replied.
“Hm?” Wang Zheng’s face immediately grew cold. “What kind of attitude is that? Are you dissatisfied?”
“I’m very satisfied. My attitude is excellent—see how sunny my smile is, how gentle my voice?” Bai Bing replied sweetly, her tone soft and smiling. She didn’t want the promised car to slip away again. “Lin Xiaolei still has meetings with Huang Wei and Liu Jin today. Since there’s time, why not visit the car market now? Then you’ll have your own car… You can drive it for surveillance!”
“I prefer riding in cars to driving them,” Wang Zheng replied.
“I’ll drive! Let me be your chauffeur—after all, that’s what a secretary should do!” Bai Bing said eagerly.
“Is that so?” Wang Zheng asked coolly, then said nothing more.
Bai Bing’s intentions were obvious—she not only wanted Wang Zheng to buy a car, but wanted to drive it herself. Her ambition was so blatant it was almost laughable. In this respect, she and Lin Xiaolei were somewhat alike.
Wang Zheng’s silence was not a tacit agreement, and Bai Bing knew it.

Am I being too hasty? Bai Bing wondered. She realized that with her current approach, the major purchase would surely be delayed. Was this a test? Wang Zheng’s silence made Bai Bing overthink. After pondering for a while, she resolved that there was no such thing as a free lunch—she would earn her reward through effort, and win Wang Zheng’s favor.
With this in mind, Bai Bing picked up the glass again, pressing it to the wall to listen to the sounds from the other side.
All morning, Bai Bing continued her surveillance—her professional specialty. By noon, still pressed against the wall, she suddenly turned to Wang Zheng and exclaimed, “She’s gone!”
“Where to?” Wang Zheng asked.
“Lunch with Liu Jin!” Bai Bing replied. “Another meal?” Wang Zheng mused. He knew full well that the purpose wasn’t the food or drink. Usually, nothing much happened at lunch; Liu Jin’s plans were more likely to unfold at night. Not that things couldn’t happen during the day, but Lin Xiaolei was a dedicated professional—she would never let drinks interfere with her work. As for Liu Jin, it was harder to find a reason to push drinks at noon. Wang Zheng concluded nothing would happen at lunch, and he was uninterested in any business dealings.
“I’m not going. Suit yourself,” Wang Zheng said to Bai Bing, standing up to go eat.
“You’re not going? What’s wrong? Aren’t you concerned about Lin Xiaolei?” Bai Bing asked, frowning, puzzled by Wang Zheng’s sudden indifference. Wasn’t he waiting for Lin Xiaolei to meet Liu Jin or Huang Wei? Why the sudden change?
“I was never that interested. If you hadn’t dragged me into a taxi last night, I wouldn’t have followed them to the restaurant!” Wang Zheng replied, defending his actions from the previous evening. “What about you? Are you going or not?”
“I… I’ll go!” Bai Bing declared, biting her lip. To her, monitoring Wang Zheng was no longer important—he wouldn’t run off. To secure the car, she had shifted her focus to Lin Xiaolei. Wang Zheng not going gave her a golden opportunity. She knew that, though Wang Zheng seemed indifferent to Lin Xiaolei, he actually cared, having invested considerable energy in her. If Lin Xiaolei got into trouble outside, and Bai Bing rescued her, Wang Zheng would be so pleased he’d buy the car.
A smile unconsciously appeared on Bai Bing’s face—she could already picture the luxury cars parked before her.
Let something happen, let something happen, something must happen!
Bang! Wang Zheng pushed open the office door, just as Lin Xiaolei stepped out of her own office. Upon seeing Wang Zheng, Lin Xiaolei froze, her eyes filled with apology and avoidance. She forced a smile, then hurried off toward the elevator.
This woman is so thin-skinned. If she were half as bold as Bai Bing, she wouldn’t have ended up in this situation.
