Chapter 22: Crisis at the Base – The Siege of Despair
The base, once a sanctuary resembling a titanic steel beast, was now shrouded in an eerie, grayish-white mist. This fog was no ordinary haze; it coiled slowly like a living creature, devouring the surrounding light. A pungent, nauseating scent of sulfur permeated the air.
The joy on the team members' faces froze instantly, replaced by the tension of facing a formidable foe. Pan Yue instinctively tightened her grip on Chu Feng’s hand, her fingertips icy. Liu Yong remained silent, the indicator lights on his mechanical arm flickering as he analyzed the anomalous data nearby. Sun Yue, agile as a cat, crouched low and scanned his surroundings with vigilance; his keen intuition told him that danger was closing in. Chen Qiang held his massive shield horizontally before him, the heavy metal surface reflecting the strange, ominous glow within the fog. Wu Xia stared intently at her intelligence device, her brow furrowed as the values on the screen descended into chaos.
"What... is happening?" Pan Yue’s voice trembled.
Chu Feng did not answer. He stared fixedly into the eerie mist, his heart churning with unease. Could it be that by touching the altar in the cavern, they had triggered some unknown chain reaction? A crushing sense of self-reproach coiled around him like a venomous snake, making it difficult to breathe. He recalled the ancient incantations on the altar, the mysterious powers, and that surge of warm energy that had flowed into his body.
"Everyone, be careful!" Chu Feng’s low voice broke the silence. "There is something wrong with this mist!"
No sooner had he spoken than a shrill screech erupted from the fog—a sound like the roar of a beast mixed with the wailing of restless spirits, chilling to the bone. Immediately after, more roars echoed from all directions, growing louder and clearer.
"Prepare for combat!" Chen Qiang bellowed, the runes on his shield flashing with blinding light. At that moment, a piercing alarm blared within the base, red lights flashed frantically, and the ground began to tremble.
"What is happening? The base..." Chu Feng’s face changed dramatically; a dark premonition surged in his mind. The base's internal alarms became increasingly shrill, piercing the eardrums of everyone present. Lights in the control room flickered erratically, and the massive screens displayed a dizzying array of red warning messages. Equipment began to operate uncontrollably, emitting harsh grinding and roaring sounds, as if on the verge of explosion.
"What’s going on? The system is out of control!" Liu Yong’s face was pale as his fingers flew across the console, attempting to regain control, but it was all in vain.
"Damn it! These machines have gone mad!" Sun Yue cursed, nimbly dodging a thrashing mechanical arm, narrowly avoiding being decapitated by a high-speed rotating gear.
"Find a way to stabilize the situation!" Chu Feng shouted, shadow runes spreading across his arm to form a black shield, blocking a spray of flying metal shards. The team members scrambled to repair the malfunctioning equipment, but new failures emerged like a plague. The atmosphere was taut, like a string pulled to its breaking point.
"I found it! It’s the power of the evil spirits!" Sun Yue’s voice came from the ventilation duct. He leaped out like an agile leopard and pointed to a device flickering with dark red light in the corner of the control room. "The problem is right there!"
"Move!" Chu Feng did not hesitate, leading his team toward the corner. The dark red light pulsed like a heartbeat; the surrounding air twisted and warped, and a nauseating stench of blood and decay spread through the room.
"Careful! Although this energy is small, it is extremely cunning," Sun Yue warned.
Indeed, the dark red light suddenly surged, transforming into fine red lightning that struck toward the team.
"Shadow Barrier!" Chu Feng commanded. The shadow runes manifested into a massive black wall, blocking the attack.
"My turn!" Chen Qiang roared. The runes on his shield blazed with brilliant light as he swung it, reflecting the red lightning back.
"Now’s our chance!" Seizing the moment, Pan Yue waved her staff, enveloping the red glow in a holy light that purified and weakened it. Chu Feng seized the opportunity, condensing a ball of black energy in his hand and hurling it at the core of the red light.
"Boom!"
With a deafening crash, the red light dissipated instantly. The alarms in the control room gradually subsided, and the runaway equipment slowly returned to normal. The team members sighed in relief, their faces showing the joy of those who had narrowly escaped death.
"Chu Feng..." Pan Yue walked to his side, her eyes gleaming with a strange light. Chu Feng turned to look at her and suddenly froze. In Pan Yue’s eyes, beyond the relief of survival, was an indescribable tenderness. She silently took water and food from her pack, handed them to him, and whispered, "You’ve worked hard."
Chu Feng took the food, feeling the warmth in his palms, and a wave of comfort flooded his heart. He knew that Pan Yue was not just his teammate, but a harbor he could rely on.
The base was temporarily calm, but the crisis was far from over. The grayish-white mist still lingered outside, and the roars could be heard from time to time, a reminder that danger remained in wait. Liu Yong, uncharacteristically, did not bury himself in his equipment but paced the control room anxiously, casting questioning glances at Wu Xia.
Wu Xia held her intelligence device, her brow furrowed as she scanned the data on the base’s perimeter. "The anomalies inside the base are merely a symptom," she finally broke the silence. "The true source is outside."
"Outside?" Chen Qiang asked, his voice muffled. "It’s full of that damned mist out there. How are we supposed to get out?"
"I have a way." Wu Xia smiled mysteriously and pulled an ancient parchment map from her pack. "According to the intelligence, there is an underground passage on the outskirts of the base that can bypass the mist and lead directly to the source."
"An underground passage?" Sun Yue’s eyes lit up. "I like it! Exciting!"
"This mission will be extremely dangerous," Wu Xia looked at everyone sternly. "We need to be fully prepared."
Liu Yong nodded in a rare display of agreement. He walked to a corner and retrieved strange materials from a large metal crate: crystals emitting a faint blue glow and a mysterious black liquid. "These things..." he paused, looking at Wu Xia, "might come in handy."
Wu Xia took the materials and inspected them carefully. "Just as I thought," she whispered. "These are..."
Inside the control room, a faint burnt odor lingered, a remnant of the equipment overload. The blue crystals Liu Yong had brought were carefully embedded into the core of the main console, emitting a soft glow like beating hearts, injecting life into the cold machinery. The unknown black liquid was applied evenly to the circuit nodes like lubricant, making the machines, which had previously emitted harsh grinding sounds, run smooth and steady again.
After a tense repair effort, the alarms in the control room were completely silenced, and the flashing red lights returned to a normal blue. On the giant screens, data began to scroll methodically, returning to a controllable range. The team members were weary, but their faces were brightened by the solace of survival. Pan Yue gently rubbed her sore shoulders with a faint smile; Chen Qiang leaned against the wall, his heavy breathing gradually leveling out; Sun Yue whistled triumphantly, like a cat that had successfully stolen cream. Even the taciturn Liu Yong wore an imperceptible curve on his lips, seemingly satisfied with his work.
They had successfully contained the crisis within the base, finding a temporary harbor in the midst of the storm, but they all knew the true storm was still waiting for them outside.
"Whew..." Chu Feng let out a long breath, feeling his taut nerves relax slightly. He walked to the console and looked at the data on the screen, but his brow furrowed once more. Those red warning messages, which had once been chaotic and disordered, had now formed a strange pattern—one that looked exactly like the complex runes on the ancient altar.
"This..." Chu Feng pointed to the screen. "Look, these red messages... they seem to be hinting at something."
Sun Yue leaned in, stared at the screen for a long time, scratched his head, and said, "Damn, you're right. This pattern... why does it look so familiar?"
"It’s the runes from the altar!" Pan Yue exclaimed, her voice trembling. She immediately recalled the mysterious altar in the cavern and the ancient powers that had made her so uneasy.
"It seems this strange phenomenon is not random. There must be a larger force orchestrating it from behind the scenes," Wu Xia analyzed calmly. The data on her intelligence device confirmed her suspicions.
Chu Feng’s expression grew grave. He could feel a powerful force slowly awakening, and they were like a small boat in a storm, at risk of being swallowed at any moment. He clenched his fists, the shadow runes dancing on his arms and emitting a dangerous light. He knew that the challenges they would face next would be far more arduous than they had imagined.
At that moment, the base’s communication system suddenly emitted a burst of static, followed by a faint, raspy voice: "...Quickly... leave..."
The voice cut off abruptly, leaving only the sound of harsh electrical interference. Everyone looked at each other, an ominous feeling shrouding their hearts like an invisible hand, tightly gripping their throats.
"What was that?" Chen Qiang growled.
Wu Xia’s face changed. She snatched up her intelligence device; the data on it was jumping frantically again. She muttered to herself, "This power... it has started to backlash..."
The lights in the control room flickered once more, emitting an unsettling buzzing sound. Everyone turned to Chu Feng, waiting for his next instruction.
Chu Feng took a deep breath and looked around at everyone, his eyes filled with firm resolve. "If they won't let us have peace, then we shall..."
Before he could finish his sentence, the door to the control room was suddenly burst open by a tremendous force with a deafening roar.
