Chapter 23: Seeking the Path to Enhanced Ability
"…Take the initiative!" Chu Feng said, his eyes sharp and every word measured.
The moment the control room door was smashed open, a dark shadow, carried by a gust of wind, lunged forward. Chu Feng reacted instantly; the Shadow Rune surged over his entire body, turning him into a blur as he dodged the attack. The shadow slammed heavily into the console, emitting a dull, thunderous roar as metal fragments scattered in all directions.
"Look out! It’s a mutated Cursed Beast!" Sun Yue cried out, nimbly darting to the side, the cold light of her dagger flickering. The beast was massive, its body covered in twisted black runes, exhaling a nauseating stench. Its pair of scarlet eyes—
"I’ll hold it off! You find a way to enhance your abilities!" Chen Qiang roared. His muscles tensed, and earth-yellow runes spread across his body, forming a sturdy layer of rock armor. He charged at the Cursed Beast without fear, his heavy fists landing with the force of a thousand pounds.
"Right!" Pan Yue responded, grabbing Feng Yao’s hand. "Let's go!" Feng Yao nodded, her healing runes emitting a soft white light to provide continuous support to Chen Qiang. The others moved as well, splitting up according to their plan to search for ways to boost their powers.
Chu Feng dodged another strike from the beast, his brow furrowed. He knew that with their current strength, it would be difficult to defeat such a powerful creature. He had to find a way to upgrade his Shadow Rune as quickly as possible. Scanning the room, his eyes landed on a faintly glowing device on the console. What was that?
Meanwhile, in another part of the base, Pan Yue and Feng Yao were following the map to find Master Lin’s laboratory. They crept through the dimly lit corridors, the air thick with an unsettling atmosphere. Suddenly, Feng Yao stopped. "Wait, I feel like something is wrong..."
"What is it?" Pan Yue asked.
Feng Yao listened intently, her expression turning somber. "I hear... crying..." Pan Yue pricked up her ears. Sure enough, a faint sobbing sound drifted from the depths of the corridor. It sounded like a child, filled with sorrow and despair. "Let’s go check it out." Pan Yue gripped her weapon tightly and moved cautiously toward the sound.
In the underground training ground, Liu Yong and Sun Yue were attempting a new training method, hoping to trigger their latent runic power. Sweat soaked their clothes, but they showed no intention of giving up. "Again!" Liu Yong gritted his teeth. "Right!" Sun Yue replied, full of fighting spirit.
In a hidden corner of the base, Wu Xia was using the intelligence network to gather information on the forces behind these strange phenomena. Her fingers flew across the keyboard as complex data and intelligence flashed on the screen. Suddenly, her face changed. "No! They’ve discovered us..."
Back with Chu Feng, he had finally found the method to upgrade his Shadow Rune. He placed his hand on the glowing device, and a surge of powerful energy flooded his body. The Shadow Rune surged wildly over him, emitting a dazzling light. "Ah!" Chu Feng couldn't help but roar.
Just then, a cold voice echoed, "You... must all die..."
The metal floor of the control room was shattered, like the aftermath of a rampaging beast. Chu Feng’s breath came in ragged gasps, each exhalation carrying a wisp of dark vapor. He stared at the device emitting a ghostly blue light—it was hope, and yet also an unknown abyss. He took a deep breath and pressed his palm against the cold metal surface.
Instantly, a violent power rushed into him like a bursting dam. The Shadow Rune moved across his skin like a living creature, black patterns slithering like serpents and emitting an unsettling radiance. He felt his bones rattling and his muscles feeling as if they were being torn apart.
Pain and the thrill of power intertwined, forcing a low growl from his throat. Meanwhile, in other parts of the base, the situation for the rest of the team was grim. Pan Yue and Feng Yao navigated the dim corridors, the cracks in the walls resembling hideous scars. They searched every laboratory marked on the map, only to find them stripped of supplies, leaving behind only scattered equipment and documents. The air was filled with the smell of decay, woven with that mournful sobbing, making one shudder. Disappointment and frustration surged like a tide, leaving them breathless.
In the training ground, sweat from Liu Yong and Sun Yue had soaked their clothes, leaving puddles on the floor. They had tried countless methods, but could not trigger greater power. Sun Yue’s dagger made a harsh friction sound with every empty swing, and Liu Yong’s punches against the targets thudded dully, yet they could not break through their bottleneck.
As for Wu Xia, her fingers tapped rapidly on the keyboard, with obscure data scrolling across the screen. She was like a ghost navigating an ocean of data, trying to find the mastermind behind it all. However, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack; the clues were scarce, and danger was quietly closing in.
Just then, a sharp shriek shattered the silence of the base. The ground trembled slightly, and a nauseating stench of rot rapidly filled the air. Shadowy figures emerged from the dark corners, their forms twisted and covered in eerie runes, their eyes gleaming with bloodlust.
"It’s them! They’re here!" Sun Yue exclaimed, clutching her dagger.
Chu Feng roared, the power of the Shadow Rune surging within him. With a movement, he charged at the foremost specter like a ghost. Black flames rose around him, and every punch carried immense force, shattering the specters into fragments. In the heat of battle, he felt as if he had entered a profound state, his mastery of the Shadow Rune growing increasingly fluid. He could feel the power within him rising at an unprecedented speed.
The other team members joined the fray. Though their power was not yet great, they coordinated perfectly, providing as much support to Chu Feng as they could. Intense fighting broke out across the base; screams and collisions intertwined like a symphony played by the Grim Reaper.
Finally, Chu Feng seized an opportunity and landed a heavy blow on the chest of one of the specters. It flew back like a broken kite, slammed into the wall, and vanished into a mist of black smoke. Seeing this, the remaining specters retreated, seemingly fearful of Chu Feng’s power.
As the battle ended, a faint smell of blood lingered in the air, and the black runes on Chu Feng’s body appeared deeper, shimmering with an uncanny luster. The team gathered around him.
At that moment, Pan Yue rushed forward regardless of the danger and hugged Chu Feng tightly. As the smoke cleared, the scent of blood and the lingering energy of the runes remained. Pan Yue held him firmly, as if pouring all her fear and worry into the embrace. Chu Feng felt her soft body and her trembling shoulders, and a wave of warmth surged in his heart. He gently patted her back, feeling her rapid heartbeat, while his own heart quickened its rhythm.
The bond between them grew stronger in that moment, forged like steel in the fires of war, indestructible. A moment later, Pan Yue pulled back, her face flushed. The other members gathered around, their faces filled with the joy of survival and admiration for Chu Feng’s strength.
"Chu Feng, you were incredible!" Sun Yue exclaimed excitedly. "The way you looked just now, you were like a god of war!"
"Indeed, Chu Feng, your Shadow Rune has improved quite a bit, hasn't it?" Liu Yong asked.
Chu Feng smiled modestly. "Just lucky. This battle also gave me a deeper understanding of the Shadow Rune."
Afterwards, the group took a brief rest at the base, tended to the wounded, and immediately set out for Master Lin’s residence. They were desperate to know how to effectively enhance their runic abilities to face the challenges ahead.
Master Lin’s residence was located in the deepest part of the base. Along the way, the group faced many dangers, but this time, they coordinated with greater tacit understanding and composure. Finally, they arrived.
Master Lin sat quietly on a mat, his demeanor as ethereal as ever, as if he had long anticipated their arrival. "You have come," he said, opening his eyes slowly, his tone calm.
"Master Lin, we want to know how to enhance our runic abilities more effectively," Chu Feng asked, getting straight to the point.
Master Lin did not answer directly. Instead, he looked at Chu Feng meaningfully and said, "Everyone's runic ability is unique, so the methods of enhancement naturally differ. Rather than asking me, why not ask yourself?"
Chu Feng was stunned, filled with confusion. Master Lin’s answer was unexpected, prompting him to reflect on his own abilities and the direction of his growth.
"Explore yourself, and you will find the true answer..." Master Lin’s voice echoed in the room like a temple bell, striking the heart of everyone present.
Chu Feng fell into deep thought, recalling the sensation during the battle and the changes in his Shadow Rune. Suddenly, a flash of insight struck him, and a bold idea began to take shape. "I think I know what to do..." Chu Feng looked up, his eyes shining with confidence.
"Very well. Share your thoughts with the others..."
Chu Feng took a deep breath and said slowly, "I realized that during battle, when my emotions reach their peak, the power of the Shadow Rune increases significantly. I think this might be the key—integrating one's own emotions into the runes."
His words resonated with the team.
Pan Yue pondered, "My healing runes seem to be most effective when I am calm and peaceful." Feng Yao nodded in agreement, "My healing runes are the same; furthermore, when my heart is full of love, the healing power is even stronger."
Liu Yong mused, "My mechanical runes operate with the highest efficiency when I am focused and calculating precisely." Sun Yue jumped up excitedly, "My speed runes work faster in tense, high-pressure environments!" Chen Qiang added in a muffled voice, "My defense runes are strongest when I feel threatened and need to protect my companions!" Wu Xia thought for a moment, "My intelligence runes are most efficient when I am analyzing calmly and peeling back the layers."
Inspired, the team immediately began to experiment with their new methods of enhancement. Chu Feng closed his eyes, recalling the tension of the battle and his desire to protect his companions; the Shadow Rune flowed slowly over him, emitting a dark glow. Pan Yue and Feng Yao sat cross-legged, meditating on images of world peace and harmony, their healing runes glowing with soft white light. Liu Yong began to dismantle and reassemble precise mechanical parts, his mechanical runes flickering with a metallic sheen. Sun Yue darted across the training ground, her speed runes flashing like lightning. Chen Qiang imagined himself shielding his companions from powerful attacks, his defense runes forming a solid armor. Wu Xia began to organize and analyze various data, her intelligence runes flowing at her fingertips like streams of information.
For a time, the entire base was filled with the fluctuations of runic energy, various lights intertwining like a fantasy world. The team members’ faces were filled with hope; they could see the dawn of their growth, the hope of defeating the specters and saving the world from the apocalypse.
However, just as everyone thought things were going smoothly, a powerful attack suddenly struck. The base shook violently, cracks appeared in the walls, and debris fell from the ceiling. The attack was so sudden and intense that everyone was caught off guard.
"What's happening?" Chu Feng cried out, the Shadow Rune instantly covering his body as he scanned the surroundings vigilantly.
"This power... it's so strong!" Chen Qiang’s face was grave as he activated his defense runes to protect himself and his companions.
"Where... where did this attack come from?" Pan Yue asked in a panic.
"I don't know..." Feng Yao shook her head.
"Oh no! Something is coming!" Sun Yue pointed toward the base entrance, shouting in terror.
A massive black shadow was slowly walking in from the entrance. It radiated a suffocating sense of oppression, like a demon from hell...
"Prepare for battle!" Chu Feng shouted, his eyes flashing with resolve. "No matter who it is, no one will hurt my companions!"
