Chapter 32: You Are Truly Disgusting
Perhaps because Tang Xi had remained motionless for so long, Xiao Feng shouted impatiently, "Are you deaf or blind, you rabbit? Can’t you hear my daddy talking to you?"
The volume was loud enough to startle Mrs. Liu. Confused by the situation, she rushed over. "I’ll take the picture for you."
Gu Yu glanced at the rabbit, feeling a strange sense of unease, but he quickly handed his phone to Mrs. Liu.
When Mrs. Liu caught sight of Gu Yu’s face, the expression beneath the mascot head instantly turned sickly pale. She recognized him; while she had never met him in person, she had seen his photos on Tang Xi’s phone. Compared to her own husband, Gu Yu was the epitome of an ideal partner—wealthy, capable, emotionally stable, and doting on his wife. She had once envied Tang Xi beyond measure.
She stammered for a long moment before finally asking, "Is—is this your child?"
"Yes, this is my son," Gu Yu replied, pulling Xiao Feng close with a proud smile.
"And this lady... is she your wife?"
Before Gu Yu could speak, Gu Wennuan hurriedly hooked her arm through his, leaning her head affectionately against his shoulder. "Of course I’m his wife. Right, darling?" She intentionally drew out the last word, desperate for everyone around to hear it.
Gu Yu cast her a look of disapproval, but he did not refute her. Today was Xiao Feng’s big day; he couldn't cause the boy to lose face in front of so many people, or he would only be bullied more at kindergarten.
Just as Mrs. Liu was wondering what to say, Tang Xi reached out and took the phone from her hands. "I’ll take it."
Desperate to escape the tense atmosphere, Mrs. Liu handed the phone over immediately, her eyes full of worry and sympathy as she looked at Tang Xi.
Tang Xi’s hands trembled slightly while holding the phone, but her face beneath the headgear was terrifyingly calm. Her husband was attending a family sports day with another woman and child, and they were preparing to take a family portrait together. Their smiles cut through her heart like blades. He had once sworn that he would not involve himself in Xiao Feng’s kindergarten affairs, yet he had turned around and enrolled him in the very school Gu Wennuan had wanted most. How many of his words were ever true?
She raised the phone and snapped several pictures. Gu Yu stood with an arm around each of them, smiling gently at the lens. Once, such smiles had been hers alone; she never imagined she would have to share them. She couldn't deny that Gu Yu’s recent attempts at reconciliation had shown sincerity, and a small part of her heart had wavered. Five years of history were not five days, nor was it something one could simply cast aside with a stubborn remark. Only the one drinking the water knows its temperature.
"Thank you, Teacher Rabbit." Gu Yu walked over after the photos were taken to retrieve his phone, looking down to admire the shots.
Strangely, the phone screen showed only the sky; there were no people in the frames. He frowned, confused. "I wanted a family portrait, not landscape photos."
"A family portrait? My apologies. When faced with such disgusting people, I couldn't bring myself to press the shutter."
The voice made Gu Yu freeze. When he turned around, he saw Tang Xi, who had just pulled off the rabbit headgear.
In an instant, the world seemed to collapse. Gu Yu felt as if something had shattered before him, crashing to the ground in pieces. He turned pale, his mouth agape, unable to utter a single word. A wave of terror gripped his throat like a vice.
Tang Xi did not look at him; she cradled the rabbit headgear in her arms and turned to leave.
"Wife, it’s not what you think. Let me explain!" Gu Yu chased after her, desperate. He tried to grab Tang Xi’s arm, but she shook him off with a violent motion.
"Don't touch me. You are truly disgusting."
Xiao Feng called him Daddy, and he answered. Gu Wennuan called him her husband, and he didn't refuse. He said that was his son, and he said they were taking a family portrait.
Then what was she? A mistress?
How truly laughable.
