Chapter 119: All Wise Men!
Lin Xuan’s adjustment to Zhongtian was faster than Wang Zheng had anticipated. They say hosts possess agile and sharp minds, and it seems that saying holds true. Perhaps it was because Lin Xuan studied economics in college, making her well-versed in professional terminology and business jargon; she seemed to have a photographic memory for all the documents she reviewed.
Even Lin Xiaolei was deeply impressed. More than once, she told Wang Zheng that Lin Xuan was an outstanding woman and that the three-thousand-yuan salary was a bargain. By the second day, Lin Xuan was already helping Lin Xiaolei review files, and by the third, she was discussing the Zhongtian exhibition with her. In just three days, Lin Xuan had conquered Lin Xiaolei with her competence; one had to admit, this woman had skill, talent, and real finesse.
Naturally, it wasn’t just Lin Xiaolei whom Lin Xuan conquered; it was also the "women’s army" of Wang Zheng’s faction at Zhongtian, as well as the employees, executives, and managers throughout Yongan Tower. News of the entertainment anchor Lin Xuan working at Zhongtian spread like wildfire. Every morning during the commute or in the evening when leaving work, people would vie to wait outside the main entrance or by the windows of Yongan Tower, hoping to catch a glimpse of the beautiful host from Jinghua Television.
Lin Xuan, of course, would not disappoint her fans, always presenting a radiant and approachable demeanor. Though, perhaps she would have seemed even more approachable if she weren't getting into that white Maserati Quattroporte.
Some were happy, while others were miserable. Watching helplessly as Lin Xuan used her charm to bewitch everyone, Bai Bing felt she had no recourse. During the day, Lin Xuan was always in Lin Xiaolei’s office, and at meals, the four of them were together, leaving Bai Bing no opportunity for retaliation. As for after work, by the time she finished cooking, eating, and cleaning up, it was already past seven, and aside from street racing, she had no heart for anything else.
Even playing pranks requires one to be in the right mood.
Bai Bing questioned herself more than once: why was she so desperate to mess with Lin Xuan? After careful thought, she realized there was no real enmity between them—even Bai Bing couldn’t find a concrete reason. If she really had to nitpick... perhaps it was because Wang Zheng had focused all his attention on Lin Xuan, forgetting the existence of his secretary, which left Bai Bing feeling uncomfortable and annoyed whenever she saw the two of them acting cozy. Did that count as a reason?
Therefore, Bai Bing decided she wouldn't just teach Lin Xuan a lesson; she would expose the woman’s "true, venomous, and promiscuous nature" before everyone.
Yes. Expose her thoroughly!
The more she thought about it, the more satisfying it felt. A sinister smile couldn't help but creep onto Bai Bing’s face.
Sitting in his chair, Wang Zheng watched Bai Bing across the desk. This girl had been flashing silly grins for days. He had no idea what kind of "spring dreams" she was having in broad daylight to have turned into such a fool.
Wang Zheng tore off a piece of paper, crumpled it into a ball, and threw it at Bai Bing.
*Thwack.* The paper ball hit Bai Bing’s forehead, bounced off, landed on the table, and rolled right into Wang Zheng’s hand. Perhaps her daydream was particularly pleasant, as she didn't even snap out of it after being hit. Wang Zheng threw it twice more in the same manner before Bai Bing finally startled back to reality. When Wang Zheng tossed the paper ball a fourth time, Bai Bing reached out and caught it.
"Careful, or I'll report you for assaulting an officer!" Bai Bing snapped, weighing the paper ball in her hand like a baseball pitcher, preparing to retaliate.
"You’d be better off reporting me for murder," Wang Zheng laughed, standing up from his chair. "If you're done with your afternoon daydreaming, you should rest. If you're not tired, feel free to keep going. I, for one, am heading home."
Hearing this, Bai Bing checked the time. Five o'clock? Already? It felt like only a moment had passed!
There was now an extra person in Wang Zheng’s car: Lin Xuan. Even though Bai Bing was extremely unwilling, the world did not revolve around her desires. Wang Zheng’s attitude toward her had always been: "Take it or leave it." Carrying Lin Xuan at least allowed him to hear her report on the day’s work and take advantage of the proximity. Setting aside what Lin Xuan might be thinking, her figure was quite full and pleasant to the touch. As for Bai Bing? Aside from bickering and fighting with him all day, Wang Zheng couldn't think of anything else she could do.
After dropping Lin Xuan off at home, Wang Zheng drove straight to the television station.
"Even though Su Xue and Chu Jun are anchoring tonight, you don't have to be here so early, do you?" Bai Bing asked after getting out of the car.
"You can go back," Wang Zheng said coldly. He didn't even look at her, which made Bai Bing tremble with rage.
The matter with Lin Xuan was settled, so Wang Zheng no longer focused on the entertainment department; instead, he concentrated his efforts on the news team. If the entertainment department focused more on outward appearance, the news team valued a certain temperament—though, naturally, with a good appearance as a prerequisite.
There were still many undiscovered beauties here!
Upon entering the news department, the first person he saw was the remarkably poised Liao Tong. As the head of the news team, she always stayed late and only took one day off a week; she was an unadulterated workaholic.
"You're here?"
"Yeah."
Liao Tong greeted Wang Zheng with a familiar smile, like two old friends. Though their words were few, they seemed to share a tacit understanding. Su Xue and Chu Jun were busy with pre-broadcast preparations—checking scripts and verifying details; this was the busiest time for them.
"Mr. Wang, have you had dinner?" Liao Tong suddenly turned and asked.
"Not yet."
"Then, Mr. Wang, would you care to join me for a work meal?" she asked. It was hard to imagine Liao Tong offering to dine with Wang Zheng at such a busy time. Was this a moment of leisure stolen from a hectic schedule? Perhaps she was so in control of her work that she felt completely at ease.
"Of course," Wang Zheng smiled. His intuition had never failed him, and it hadn't this time either.
Liao Tong set aside her things, gave brief instructions to the staff at the machines, and led Wang Zheng toward the cafeteria.
Bai Bing followed them closely and meticulously until, upon reaching the dining hall, Wang Zheng threatened to knock her out, finally forcing her to keep a distance of about eight meters from his and Liao Tong’s table.
"Actually, the work meals here aren't half bad. I came here specifically for one," Wang Zheng said with a smile as he looked at the food Liao Tong had brought. He took the tray she handed him—this time, it was Liao Tong’s treat, saving Wang Zheng a bit of money. As for Bai Bing... she had to pay for her own!
"Really?" Liao Tong smiled upon hearing this. She looked down at the food on her tray and said faintly, "But if you eat the same thing all the time, even the best food becomes tasteless. Life is the same—if you always live it one way, sooner or later you will grow tired of it and find it dull."
Wang Zheng looked at Liao Tong across from him. Her expression was calm, but there was a deeper meaning behind her words. This was an intriguing question—a test to see if he was a smart man? Wang Zheng thought to himself.
"If Ms. Liao feels tired of the work meals, I can accompany you to eat outside. There are countless restaurants in Jinghua City; even if we tried one a day, it would take a while," Wang Zheng replied.
Of course, his words held a double meaning: if one is tired of a certain way of life, one can try a different path. If one finds their personal life dull, one can find a man to spice things up.
A man? Wang Zheng was, of course, referring to himself. Why would he introduce such a stunning beauty to someone else? *Hell, am I crazy?*
Liao Tong slightly raised her head, looking at Wang Zheng. A flash of unidentifiable light flickered in her dignified and elegant eyes before she gave a faint smile. "I'm afraid you’re too busy, Mr. Wang."
"Aren't we eating together right now? It’s just a change of venue. Besides, I have a principle: I never work after hours, so I have plenty of time after five o'clock."
"Is that so? Then I should thank you for the excellent suggestion. I will give it serious consideration." Liao Tong offered a gentle smile and continued eating her meal with her usual grace.
The conversation revolved around the work meal, but the underlying meaning was something else entirely. The woman had interest, the man had affection, and in their plain dialogue, their hearts were unknowingly expressed.
Seeing Liao Tong begin to eat, Wang Zheng picked up his chopsticks, doing his best to maintain an air of refinement to match her elegance. This made them appear more harmonious, invisibly bridging the distance between them. Without that sense of distance, everything became simple.
Wang Zheng had obtained the answer he wanted and had simultaneously responded to the question Liao Tong had posed. He had proven to her that he was indeed a smart man.
Conversations between smart people are always this simple, and Wang Zheng enjoyed dealing with them, especially smart women.
