Volume One, Chapter Seven: Envy Me for Having a Wonderful Daughter
Chen Ping never expected that while she had been protecting the Jiang family, preventing her daughter from bringing disgrace upon them, they would turn around and blame her instead.
A sudden sting in her nose left her choked with silent grievance.
“Don’t say that about Mom,” Jiang Xue’er stepped forward, grasping Chen Ping’s hand. “This was Shen Yu’s childishness. Since she knew the Qin family, she should have told us earlier. Why make us suffer such embarrassment on purpose?”
“Exactly! I’ve always said she’s an ungrateful white-eyed wolf!” Chen Ping nodded vigorously, finally finding an outlet for her pent-up resentment.
Though Jiang Chao and Jiang Daming remained silent, it was clear they too resented Shen Yu.
However, considering Shen Yu was still striving for the Jiang family’s sake, they decided not to confront her today.
...
Elsewhere, Shen Yu followed Madam Qin, carefully avoiding others as they ascended a narrow stairway to the penthouse.
“Today is my husband’s birthday, and the house is a mess. I’m sorry for the poor impression,” Madam Qin apologized as they walked.
Shen Yu shook her head, inwardly feeling the coldness of the wealthy elite.
She had heard from her master that the current incident was quite serious. It was surprising the family still had the heart to hold a birthday celebration.
Madam Qin seemed to understand her thoughts and sighed deeply. “Our family’s grandson, Feishi, has never been the same since his accident. We dare not let anyone know, fearing it could disrupt the company. This birthday party was really a necessity…”
“But if something happened to him, no matter how prosperous the Qin family is, it would mean nothing.” Tears welled up as she spoke.
Shen Yu quickly tore a tissue from her pocket and handed it to her, offering sincere comfort. “Please don’t worry. Since I’m here, I will do my utmost to fulfill your request.”
Madam Qin was not one to dwell on complaints, merely thanking Shen Yu twice before falling silent.
When they reached the room of her grandson, Qin Feishi, they found a young man seemingly in a trance, repeatedly banging his head against the wall. Nearby stood a middle-aged woman holding a pillow to his forehead, fearing he might hurt himself.
The woman glanced at Madam Qin and Shen Yu, sobbing softly, “Mom.”
Madam Qin introduced them: the young man was Qin Feishi, the subject of concern, and the woman was Qin Feishi’s mother, Madam Qin.
Shen Yu had little patience for tearful displays, merely nodding slightly at Madam Qin before stepping forward to examine Qin Feishi. A frown crept over her face.
“Did he have any prior accidents before this?” Shen Yu asked the two women standing nearby.
Madam Qin exchanged a glance with Madam Qin Senior. Receiving her nod, she replied, “Just a minor car accident. He accidentally hit a flower bed by the roadside, with barely a scratch. It shouldn’t have been the cause...”
They had consulted many doctors and even charlatans, but to no avail. Out of desperation, Madam Qin Senior had painstakingly contacted some hermit.
Yet the one who arrived was a mere young girl. She didn’t trust the girl much, but out of respect for her mother-in-law, she hadn’t sent her away.
Shen Yu pressed her lips together without speaking.
She used her thumbnail to prick her index finger, then pressed the bleeding fingertip to the center of Qin Feishi’s forehead.
When she withdrew her hand, the bloodstain resembled a deliberately placed vermilion birthmark—round and bright.
Qin Feishi immediately calmed, ceasing to bang his head.
Madam Qin’s eyes widened in disbelief as she looked back at her mother-in-law—this patient, unresponsive even to sedatives, had been healed by the drop of blood from a young girl?
Shen Yu ignored their small gestures and instructed several servants to help carry Qin Feishi to the bed.
Turning to Madam Qin Senior, she said, “It’s nothing serious, just a loss of vital energy…”
“He lost focus while driving. Now that he’s back, his vital energy remains somewhere—it’s just that he’s searching for it.” Shen Yu offered a more comprehensible explanation for them.
Yet both mother and grandmother looked puzzled, unable to grasp her meaning.
“Enough talk. Just tell me how to save my son,” Madam Qin lost patience. Regardless of Shen Yu’s display of skill, or even if she hadn’t done anything yet, she would try anything that might help her son.
“Today isn’t convenient. Let’s wait until tomorrow.” Shen Yu considered briefly. “Tomorrow morning, I will go to the scene of the accident and retrieve that vital energy. He will then sleep peacefully and won’t bang his head or wander around. You can rest assured.”
Madam Qin Senior and Madam Qin exchanged a glance, shocked and with tears in their eyes.
“Is there anything we need to prepare?” Madam Qin Senior, steadier in mind, asked.
Shen Yu’s expression turned serious. “Just have the remaining payment ready.”
Others were left speechless.
“Hermit, do you have any other matters?” Madam Qin Senior asked again. Fearing Shen Yu might misunderstand, she quickly added, “I mean no offense. It’s just getting late, so if you’re not in a hurry, please wait until after dinner.”
Shen Yu smiled, understanding the polite way of urging her to work.
She planned to return to the Jiang family this afternoon to pack and move into Gu Jinyan’s apartment. There were still unsuitable things to purchase, and the back-and-forth would take time. She did not want to schedule her time too tightly.
A meal’s time, however, was still manageable.
“Very well, thank you.” Madam Qin Senior nodded with a smile.
The banquet was held in the first-floor living room.
Madam Qin Senior led Shen Yu downstairs and sent servants ahead to notify Elder Qin and Mr. Qin.
As they descended, Elder Qin was just stepping out to greet them.
Though others did not know the cause of the gathering, seeing the elder’s enthusiasm, many turned to look.
After a long wait, it was only Madam Qin Senior arriving with a young girl. Elder Qin smiled, shook hands with the girl, and ultimately ceded his seat of honor to her.
Everyone present was astonished, whispering guesses about the young girl’s identity.
Madam Guan, sitting in a corner, clenched her teeth in anger and upon seeing Chen Ping, could no longer restrain herself. “Some people are just born unlucky. Even when wealth falls into your hands, you can’t hold onto it!”
“Madam Guan, what’s the matter?” Nearby ladies were baffled by her harsh words.
Madam Guan sneered, rolling her eyes at Chen Ping, conveying volumes without a word.
They had come to the Qin household not merely for the banquet. Having offended such an esteemed guest of the Qin family, she and her husband felt uneasy and dared not speak ill of Shen Yu in her presence.
Chen Ping clenched her fists tightly. Normally she might let it go, but why should her daughter be in the spotlight while she endured such humiliation in the shadows?
Summoning courage, she said, “Perhaps Madam Guan envies me for having such a fine daughter.”
Those nearby were taken aback. Everyone knew Chen Ping, the nouveau riche wife who had always fawned over Madam Guan. How could she suddenly show such backbone?
“You said she was a beggar?” Madam Guan was stunned by Chen Ping’s shamelessness. She had refused to acknowledge Shen Yu before, but now seemed to be leaning on her daughter’s status.
Before she could finish, Mr. Guan elbowed her lightly and shook his head, signaling her to stop.
To Chen Ping, this was proof they dared not provoke her.
