Chapter Thirty-Six: Annihilating the Four Obsidian Generals in an Instant!
"Are all these guys from civilian organizations?" Captain America shielded his eyes from the sunlight, squinting in disbelief as he asked Natasha beside him. For the first time, he wondered if perhaps he shouldn’t have joined the army—maybe he should have considered a career in science instead?
Maybe medicine and soldiering can’t save America after all; perhaps only technology can truly rescue humanity.
Natasha spun her twin pistols before sliding them back into her belt.
"That’s what Nick said. Just believe it."
"Hulk!"
A hurricane gust swept by, Natasha’s red hair flying. The incoming metal leviathan was flattened beneath a massive hammer, reduced to a puddle of blood—gruesome and unsightly.
"That big lug," Natasha muttered, shooting a disgruntled look at Hulk’s retreating figure. Yet deep inside, she felt a ripple of emotion… This man was so incredibly strong…
Up in the sky, Thor, nearly faint with exhaustion, finally caught a moment’s respite. Pausing his thunder, he began searching for his brother again. But by now, Loki had already taken refuge in a corner, trembling, after the onslaught unleashed by Hulk, Tony, and the others.
"Loki! What on earth is happening down there? Why do I feel my warriors are on the verge of annihilation?"
The Chitauri were half-organic, half-machine; their bodies all networked to the mothership. The sudden, massive casualties instantly roused the Chitauri leader's suspicion.
Especially the loss of the troop carriers—those things were the Chitauri’s heavy artillery!
In just a short while, at least ten carriers had been lost. How could he not be alarmed?
Loki, clutching his mouth, roared back at the Chitauri linked in his mind, "Why are you asking me? I should be asking you! What kind of garbage troops did you send? Only a handful of people showed up on Midgard, and they’re already wiping out your entire army! This is for Lord Thanos’s great enterprise—can’t you take it seriously?"
"I—" The Chitauri leader was left speechless by Loki’s tirade. True, aside from the carriers, the rest were basically cannon fodder—but even cannon fodder had conquered more than one planet! What was this Midgard, to swallow up nearly a million of his troops?
"I’ll report this to Ebony Maw immediately."
There was no choice—the facts were as Loki said. However disgruntled, the Chitauri leader had to contact Ebony Maw.
"Lord Ebony Maw!"
The Chitauri leader entered the core of the steel warship, bowed respectfully, and reported, "We have encountered formidable enemies. Loki is requesting reinforcements."
"Formidable enemies? Did Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme intervene?" Ebony Maw frowned. Normally, the Sorcerer Supreme should have been entangled by the alien demon Thanos invited. How could they have time to join this battle?
"No," the Chitauri leader shook his head quickly. "It’s a group of powerful beings who suddenly appeared on Earth."
"Oh? Who are they?" The mention of unexpected strong foes piqued Ebony Maw’s interest at once. "Describe their characteristics. Let’s see who in the universe dares defy Lord Thanos!"
"The ones I know—there’s the prince of Asgard, Thor the God of Thunder; a big green fellow, incredibly strong; and someone in armor flying everywhere—some kind of technological construct..."
The Chitauri leader briefly described the heroes who had halted his advance.
Ebony Maw had followed Thanos across the universe for many years—what oddities had he not seen? Just from the description, he could tell these were all low-tier technological products.
"How bold of you! A mere planet that hasn’t even left the Alpha Star system, and you claim their tech can stop the Chitauri? Do you realize the Cosmic Cube is essential to our master’s ambition—it must be secured!"
Ebony Maw was furious. The Chitauri had grown arrogant from their many conquests. If they couldn’t take a planet, why not send reinforcements or elite troops?
If the Black Order weren’t accompanying Thanos to search for the Power Stone, these useless minions wouldn’t even be needed!
"My lord, I swear I’m not hiding anything... Earth’s heroes are truly powerful—even our troop carriers can’t withstand a single blow!"
Terrified, the Chitauri leader fell to his knees, begging for mercy. Seeing his sincerity—even bleeding—Ebony Maw half-believed him.
"Hmph! Since you claim they’re that strong, I’ll go with you myself! Proxima Midnight, Supergiant, Corvus Glaive—come with me!"
"Roar!" Supergiant swung her massive weapon, hefting it as she followed Ebony Maw’s floating form.
……
On Earth, the portal in the sky suddenly burst with dazzling light, reflecting a blue beam downward. Tony, startled, quickly maneuvered his suits out of the way. As the light faded and figures emerged, the members of the Illuminati realized—the super-powerful beings the Sorcerer Supreme had warned about were here!
Far away, atop a high-rise Tony Stark had purchased for surprise attacks (to avoid mishaps, he’d bought a rooftop on every street in New York), Hao Yun extended his arms—each stretching into a three-meter-long cannon barrel.
With Thor’s help, the electromagnetic force transformed from lightning had reached the limit the nanobots could handle.
Then, at the instant Ebony Maw and Corvus Glaive appeared, two specially crafted spindle-shaped shells were loaded and fired.
"Boom!"
Before the sonic boom could be heard, two black streaks zipped across the battlefield, striking Ebony Maw and Corvus Glaive squarely in the head!
Under Thanos’s command, Ebony Maw the telepath and Corvus Glaive the assassin fell dead on the spot!
"Rhodey, it’s our turn! Hulk!"
Tony laughed heartily, charging straight at Proxima Midnight with Rhodey; the heavy fighter Supergiant was seized by Hulk, who proceeded to slam her mercilessly—a gruesome sight.
Aboard the Chitauri flagship, the leader stared in shock as Ebony Maw and Corvus Glaive were killed, and the other two generals were pinned down. With a cry, he frantically dispatched all remaining troops to try to rescue Proxima Midnight and Supergiant.
But the influx of single-pilot crafts and troop carriers only triggered the full might of White Nightmare Angel!
"Baymax! Activate all Prism Towers!"
"Biubiubiu..."
Above Trident Tower, the pre-positioned Prism Towers unleashed their full power. Countless white beams crisscrossed the sky, forming a cutting net that eliminated every incoming enemy and metal leviathan—none escaped.
With their ambush complete, Hao Yun and Thor joined the battle, sweeping away the remaining foes!
"The electricity dancing at your fingertips is the undying faith of my life! Railgun Mk II—Scattershot!"
"I am Thor, God of Thunder, for the glory of the Northern Gods!"
Meanwhile, on the ground, Thor—having just defeated Loki in the chaos and snatched the scepter—stared in shock at the little dog wielding lightning in the sky and Hao Yun shimmering with electric power. After a moment’s hesitation, he couldn’t help but turn to Loki, who lay on the ground.
"Brother, do you think Father might have hidden another wife or two on Midgard—a human stepmother and maybe a dog as our third mother…?"
