Chapter Four: The Past Month
“Alright, let's give it a try!”
“System, initiate unlimited lottery!”
A dazzling wheel appeared before Hao Yun’s eyes... He focused, carefully examining the rewards displayed: Kaleidoscope Sharingan, Navy Six Styles, Glint-Glint Fruit... countless items from the anime worlds of his previous life spun before him, some of which possessed formidable power.
Zanpakuto, Devil Fruits, ninja bloodlines—any one of these could bring Hao Yun tremendous help if drawn!
And with the creative comments from forum friends in his past life, he could easily outmatch Thanos, even go head-to-head with OAA!
As expected, the items obtained through system sign-ins surely originated from the various anime and cinematic universes of his previous life!
Silently, Hao Yun prayed to Gatling Bodhisattva, Yukari Yakumo, Demon Child Nezha, and other divine figures from the anime worlds. Then, his consciousness pressed down hard on the wheel.
“Begin the lottery!”
The wheel spun rapidly, countless heart-stirring rewards flashing past the pointer... Hao Yun’s heart raced faster and faster. Please, let him land a truly powerful reward!
Time passed, and the wheel gradually slowed. Hao Yun watched as the pointer passed over the Devil Fruit, the Zanpakuto, the ninja bloodline... then, suddenly, it stopped!
“Congratulations, Host. You have acquired the superpower of Mikoto Misaka from A Certain Magical Index, LV5 Electromaster!”
“Damn, damn, what kind of useless ability is this... Electromaster, I’ve never even heard of it, damn...”
After Angel had settled the address for their new home, she returned to find Hao Yun sprawled on the sofa, looking dejected.
“Hao Yun, did you go to collect your admission letter today?”
Angel frowned slightly. She disliked lecturing her child about working hard—after all, Hao Yun was already diligent enough. She’d much rather see him bring home a few girlfriends.
But skipping out on the promise to collect the letter today rubbed her the wrong way. In her view, Hao Yun could be lazy or slow, but he must never break his word.
“I... I’m sorry, I... I forgot.”
Hao Yun understood his mother’s ways well, and he obediently lowered his head to admit his mistake, offering no excuses.
“Hmph! As long as you know you were wrong. Remember to go to school and collect your letter tomorrow!”
.................
The following month passed without incident. Hao Yun decided to attend Harvard University, taking the opportunity to admire the trophies his future uncle had won.
Because they needed to move house, and since most famous spots in New York besides the museums were not easily accessible, Hao Yun didn’t seek out sign-in opportunities. Instead, he stayed home and worked on his abilities.
Once he truly fused with his new power, he realized that the LV5 Electromaster ability was actually Mikoto Misaka’s Railgun!
“System, display personal attributes!”
Host: Hao Yun
Physical Constitution: Peak Human
Skills: LV5 Electromaster
Items: None
Not bad. At last, he was no longer a blank slate. He possessed both a peak human physique and the powers of an Electromaster.
A month at home not only allowed Hao Yun to master his body completely, but also to develop several offensive and defensive skills using his Electromaster abilities.
First, his body: extraordinary stamina, recovery, and resilience—not quite at Captain America’s level, but nearly unbeatable. Strength and speed reached peak human limits; at full power, he could move nearly two tons.
Sadly, he hadn’t inherited Marcus’s terrifying speed and dynamic vision from Resident Evil. Otherwise, he could easily outmatch Captain America without his hammer!
As for Electromaster abilities, with his academic prowess, Hao Yun managed to develop three skills.
First, the Railgun: using his arm as an axis, he applied electromagnetic induction to launch a coin at three times the speed of sound (velocity 1030 m/s). The destructive power was impressive—tests showed it could pierce heavy tank armor.
Second, the Iron Sand Shield: carrying a gourd of iron sand, he could replicate Gaara’s sand shield from Naruto. Its defensive power, when fully deployed, could withstand his own Railgun.
Third, the Radar Effect: emitting electromagnetic waves like a radar, he could receive reflected signals to determine the size and distance of enemies—a valuable scouting skill. With decent penetration, he could detect opponents inside a room through walls.
The final skill was his trump card: under stormy skies, he could use his electromagnetic force to summon lightning, unleashing a strike of a million volts! Its power, though weaker than the Thunder God’s, surpassed him in precision and endurance.
After all, the Thunder God was still just a hammer-wielder for now.
Unfortunately, perhaps because the ability wasn’t innate, Hao Yun couldn’t control it as freely as Mikoto in the anime, nor could he develop more uses—a regrettable limitation.
Thus, Hao Yun had fully developed his abilities, becoming a versatile superhero capable of reconnaissance, offense, defense, and finishing moves.
Once he thoroughly understood his powers, he began preparing for his next sign-in.
“Hao Yun, you should get out and about. You can’t stay cooped up at home forever.”
That day, after another long session practicing Railgun in the backyard, Hao Yun was stopped by Angel as he entered the living room.
“Huh? But school doesn’t start for another month, right?”
Hao Yun blinked in confusion. He still had a month, and was planning to search for the New York Sanctuary to see if he could sign in for some magical physique.
What, you say the theater where Abomination appeared is also a sign-in spot? He tried, but since the location wasn’t destroyed, it didn’t qualify as a Marvel landmark, and he got nothing.
With his focus on supernatural abilities, he considered himself a mage... Having peak human physique was enough; he was taking the magic route! As for warriors... not his style! And he certainly wouldn’t risk joining Hulk and Abomination’s battlefield—it was far too dangerous.
As a transmigrator, he truly understood the art of cautious living!
“No, in a few days Tony Stark will attend another award ceremony. I want you to intern with Pepper.”
Angel spoke seriously, and Hao Yun was baffled. From what he knew of his mother, she would never contact her sister unless Pepper was facing mortal danger.
Why ask him to intern at Stark Industries... Could it be she wanted him to protect Tony Stark?
“Huh? Mom, I don’t understand.”
“Hao Yun, I’ve seen the magic you’ve cast these days; I know your abilities. I believe your prophecies as well.”
Angel beckoned Hao Yun to sit beside her, gazing at him with utmost seriousness. “I want you to think carefully about what kind of person you want to become.”
“Uh... Mom, didn’t we already talk about this last time?”
Hao Yun couldn’t quite meet his mother’s eyes. Angel was a lawyer with a strong sense of justice. Though she took cases for pay, she only defended victims.
To put it simply, his mother was a real-life version of Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben.
“No, last time we only discussed whether you should keep studying. Now, I want to know your plans for the future.”
“I don’t understand...”
“It’s simple: hero, villain, or ordinary person. Darling, you’ll have to choose one in the end.”
Angel once again forced Hao Yun to confront his own avoidance. “Do you remember what you said about the future? Spider-Man’s uncle once said, ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ Darling, you need to think carefully.”
