Chapter 139: Ye Jiangxue

Love Against All Odds Return again tomorrow, my dear. 2405 words 2026-03-24 19:19:49

Startled by my scream, a woman’s voice whispered softly, “Don’t shout, it’s me…” As she spoke, she released me and withdrew the knife. The voice sounded somewhat familiar, yet I couldn’t immediately place it.

I switched on the light and was stunned to see Sister Ye standing before me. Her face was pale, etched with pain.

Astonished, I exclaimed, “Sister Ye, why is it you?” Her sudden appearance in my old house took me completely by surprise.

She said nothing but slowly turned, walking toward the bed. The blankets were rumpled, indicating she had been lying there until my entrance startled her awake.

Her upper arm was bare, an alluring sight, and I blurted out, “Sister Ye, what brings you here? Are you here to settle the jade debt?”

The words escaped before I could stop myself, and immediately I regretted the joke. A dark stain of blood marred the back of her clothing, and something black and ominous appeared lodged there.

Horrified, I said, “Sister Ye, you’re injured.” Moving closer, I examined the wound carefully and realized it resembled a crossbow bolt or something similar.

Since it was lodged in her back, out of her sight and reach, removing it would be difficult.

She nodded painfully, “Yes.”

I asked in disbelief, “Sister Ye, what exactly happened? How did you get hurt?”

She winced, “Don’t ask about that now. Can you help me remove the bolt?”

I recalled the strange car accident and a message on my phone: “Miss Ye Jiangxue, eldest daughter of the Ye family in Huadu, has gone missing. The company’s funds have mysteriously vanished.”

If Sister Ye was indeed Ye Jiangxue, the heiress of the Ye Group, then her presence here was shrouded in mystery. Her trust in me, coming to my old home, suggested she was seeking help.

Closing the door, I said, “Lie down. Let me see the wound first.” I carefully set down the small shadowy creature I’d been holding; it obediently settled at my feet.

Ye Jiangxue blushed slightly but complied, lying face down on the bed. Gently, I lifted the back of her shirt.

The moment the fabric brushed the exposed tail of the bolt, she grimaced in pain, but didn’t utter a sound. She was a strong woman.

Revealed beneath the clothing was her flawless skin, pierced deeply by the crossbow bolt. The surrounding flesh was swollen and reddened, oozing a small amount of blood—signs of infection.

The bolt was short, without fletching at the tail. I thought of the hidden darts often seen in martial arts films—could this be a sleeve dart?

The bolt was embedded deeply, with barbs on the tip. Forcibly pulling it out would cause immense pain, possibly severe bleeding and worsen the infection, even risking her life.

Curiously, I asked, “Sister Ye, why haven’t you gone to a hospital?”

She smiled bitterly, “If I could go to a hospital, would I be hiding here?”

I blurted out, “Are you being hunted?”

She didn’t deny it. Seeing my puzzled look, she whispered, “I need your help. As for why, I’ll explain everything later.”

I frowned, “Sister Ye, I’m no doctor. There’s no gauze or antiseptics here. Pulling it out recklessly could worsen the wound. If it bleeds heavily or gets infected, it’s dangerous.”

She furrowed her brow, “Then what can we do?”

I said, “The best option is a hospital. For a doctor, this is a simple procedure.”

She sighed, “I’ve lost my ID, and those people chasing me would be watching near every hospital.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Who’s after you? Why?”

She hesitated, “Do you really want to know?”

I nodded, “I need to understand to help you.”

After a pause, she began, “My father owned a company in Huadu. I studied abroad for years. One day, his close friend, Uncle Lin, called to tell me my father died suddenly and urged me to return to inherit the business.”

I listened silently.

She continued, “When I got back, I met Uncle Lin, my stepmother, and my half-sister, Ye Yingxue. They said Father died of a heart attack during the heatwave, and by the time I arrived, he’d already been cremated. I felt something was off; his death was suspicious.”

I nodded, thinking how ruthless the battles for inheritance could be.

Ye Jiangxue went on, “Without evidence, I couldn’t pursue it, so I became despondent. Uncle Lin was Father’s closest friend; Father treated him like a brother and wanted me to marry his son, Lin Wensheng.”

I was surprised—Sister Ye was already promised to someone. A pang of melancholy hit me.

She said, “Uncle Lin comforted me and helped me take over Father’s company smoothly.”

I blurted, “So your Uncle Lin was a good man?”

I thought if he were truly good, marrying his son would be natural.

She gave a bitter smile, “I thought so too. He warmly helped me become chairman and CEO. I trusted him completely. But that old man had a heart of a beast. He plotted to kill me and frame me. It was a terrifying conspiracy.”

Curious, I asked, “What happened? What’s his name? How did you find out?”

Biting her lip, she replied, “His name’s Lin Jiajin. He said since I was so down, his son would take me traveling to cheer me up. I thought it was kind, so I went with my fiancé, Lin Wensheng. Near here, we had that car accident. My car was pushed into the reservoir—and the driver was my fiancé.”

I gasped, “So that accident was an attempt on your life by your fiancé?”

Tears welled in her eyes, “Yes. On the surface, he took me sightseeing, but he was looking for a chance to kill me. That night, seeing the reservoir, he saw his chance and acted. Had I died, it would have seemed like a tragic accident, and no one would have suspected a thing.”

I frowned in confusion, “But you’re already chairman and CEO. If he married you, he’d own the company. Why would he want to kill you?”
