142. The Awkward One
I first carried the important things back home. As for the many items that were not urgently needed, I left them in the car for the time being. I was worried that Sister Ye had been waiting too long, so I hurried home to tend to her wounds first.
When Ye Jiangxue saw me come in with bags large and small, she was about to ask whether I had bought everything she needed. But when she saw the sanitary pads, her face flushed slightly.
“I didn’t expect you to be so considerate.”
Then, looking at me somewhat awkwardly, she said, “Could you go outside for a moment?”
I nodded and took Lone Shadow to the doorway.
I peeled open a sausage and fed it to Lone Shadow outside. By then, the little creature had gradually become more lively; it dared to eat the sausage and play around near the door.
A moment later, Sister Ye called softly from inside, “A-Feng, you can come in now.”
I went inside and found her already lying facedown on the bed. I closed the door, washed my hands, then disinfected both my hands and the area around her wound with alcohol-soaked cotton.
I gently prodded the wound, and she was already in unbearable pain. I hurriedly fetched a towel and put it between her teeth, telling her to bite down on it so that she would not cry out or injure the inside of her mouth from the agony.
Then I hardened my heart and used a scalpel to cut open the skin around the sleeve dart, widening the wound.
Sister Ye’s face was flushed crimson with pain, and cold sweat streamed down her forehead. At last, gritting my teeth, I pulled the dart free. Blood immediately began to pour out, and I scrambled to press down on the wound.
By then, Sister Ye had already passed out from the pain. Someone who was afraid of pain and ticklishness could never become a surgeon, but at that moment I had no choice except to throw caution to the wind.
Without stopping to think, I stitched the wound closed with needle and thread, then covered it with medicated gauze.
When I was ready to wrap the gauze around her injury, I encountered a problem. I had to pass it around her chest, and I felt so embarrassed that my heart raced and my mind became flustered.
Of course, such embarrassment meant nothing to a doctor; it was something one encountered almost every day.
I had already been married to Sister Li, so there was nothing for me to worry about. Saving a life was what mattered. In the end, I passed the gauze around Sister Ye’s chest and bound the wound securely.
After wrapping it around her many times, I finally finished tending to the injury. By then, the quilt and my clothes were stained with blood.
I was afraid Sister Ye would catch cold, which would only make things worse, so I ignored the bloodstains on the quilt and covered her with it.
Fortunately, she woke soon afterward. She gave me a weak smile to express her gratitude.
I then boiled water and prepared something to eat. Removing the sleeve dart had been a minor operation, but there had been no anesthetic, and my crude treatment of the wound had taken a heavy toll on her strength.
First, I heated some milk for her to drink, then gave her other food, and finally administered some anti-inflammatory medicine.
Fortunately, Sister Ye had spent many years abroad and was in excellent physical condition. Before long, she was able to sit up. When she realized that I had wrapped both the wound on her chest and the one on her back tightly together, she felt awkward and uncomfortable. Frowning slightly, she said, “A-Feng, how did you wrap this? You may have tied it too tightly. It’s very uncomfortable. You’d better redo it.”
That was understandable. When she had been unconscious, she had been lying facedown on the bed, and trying to pass the gauze around her chest had been extremely troublesome.
My face turned bright red. “Sister Ye, I’m sorry. It was difficult to wrap it properly while you were unconscious.”
Her face also flushed. “I know. I’m not blaming you. I mean that I can sit up now, so it should be easier for you to wrap it.”
I felt somewhat awkward. “Then I have to wrap it all over again?”
She was actually in the mood to joke. Smiling, she said, “You worked so hard performing surgery on me. It’s only fair to let you enjoy the view one more time.”
I joked back, “Wouldn’t that be embarrassing? What if you make me take responsibility afterward?”
Sister Ye scolded me, “Stop talking nonsense. I’m cold sitting up. Wrap it again, and don’t tie it so tightly. It’s very uncomfortable.”
With no other choice, I followed her instructions and rewrapped the gauze.
When Sister Ye sat up and I began undoing the bandages, my heart still gave a sudden jump. I had wrapped her like a mummy, passing the gauze straight through the middle of her chest before binding it in place, which was why she felt so tightly constricted.
This time, at her suggestion, I passed the gauze around the upper and lower parts of her chest instead of through the middle. It was still secure, but it would not cause her discomfort. Even so, I found the sight difficult to bear, so I quickly helped her put on her underwear.
In the midst of all that rushing about, afternoon arrived before I knew it. I washed away most of the bloodstains, but the stains on the quilt would have to wait.
Just then, Fatty called and asked where I was.
“I’m at my old home,” I replied.
He said that he was also preparing to return to his hometown to visit his father. Since I had borrowed his car, I would have to drive over and pick him up.
I realized that I needed to buy another quilt, along with some daily necessities and more food. In my haste that morning, I had bought only a few simple provisions, and there were surely plenty of things I had overlooked.
I told Sister Ye that I was leaving and prepared to go. She had been in pain and exhausted for days, and was utterly worn out. Now that the dart had been removed, she felt much more at ease and wanted to sleep.
I closed the door and left with Lone Shadow.
I met Fatty at Oasis Residence. The two of us bought some things along the street. When he saw me buying a quilt, he asked curiously, “What’s going on? You’re buying a whole quilt. Are you planning to stay at your old home for a few days?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“Are you hiding some beautiful woman there?”
“Enough nonsense. Hand over some money.”
As I spoke, I snatched a thick wad of cash from his hand. I had been spending heavily these past few days and had almost no cash left in my pockets. There was little money left on my phone either.
After I took more than a thousand in cash from him, Fatty cursed and complained that I was stingy.
“Who are you calling stingy, you ungrateful wretch?”
Fatty drove, and near dusk we arrived at Maple Grove Village. We each carried our purchases home. Lone Shadow followed behind me, occasionally running ahead. It was clearly very happy.
When I got home, I saw that Sister Ye was sleeping soundly. The fact that she could sleep so peacefully meant that her wounds were probably not serious. I began busily preparing dinner, when suddenly I heard a knock at the door.
