Chapter Sixty-Five: The Beast Tide of the Ruins
Ye Yunque possessed cultivation at the sixth level of the Spirit Gathering Realm, and Dongfang Yanran had also broken through to the second level. The others, at best, had reached the second level as well, so Ye Wuya had no reason to worry about their safety. As long as they didn’t encounter beasts of overwhelming strength, there was little in the outer regions that could truly threaten them.
After careful consideration, he decided it was best not to show himself. His affairs were his alone; there was no need to involve others. Moreover, in the past month, he had repeatedly crossed paths with members of the Blazing Sun Sect and the Azure Cloud Sect, giving him a strong sense that something valuable was about to emerge from these ruins—they simply hadn’t found it yet.
It was much like tomb raiding: when word spread that treasures were to be found, every fortune hunter would flock to the site hoping for a share. Ye Wuya was driven by this same instinct. He didn’t know what level of cultivators had arrived on the other side, so he could only lie low and investigate.
Snatching things—he had grown accustomed to such acts back on Earth. The old saying, “If a man doesn’t look out for himself, heaven and earth will condemn him,” was a classic maxim. All the more so in this primordial world where life was cheap and strength reigned supreme.
Rules were made by those at the apex of the pyramid. If one had the power, one could make the rules; without it, one could only follow others’ dictates. Ye Wuya was never one to meekly accept such constraints.
He relished the feeling of having everything under his control.
Here, powerful figures were certain to arrive. For safety’s sake, Ye Wuya concealed his sword aura, making himself little more than a slightly stronger ordinary man. There was not a hint of cultivation about him, nothing to distinguish him from any other commoner.
His gaze was deep as he looked toward the heart of the ruins. Lately, haunting bird cries and beastly roars had echoed from within, and the ground often trembled. Yet today, the ruins were unnaturally still, and Ye Wuya guessed something unknown was unfolding in the depths.
Taking advantage of the moment, he glanced one last time at the two women, then carefully leapt through the rocky forest, advancing in stealth.
The disturbances had ceased; now, venturing forward might yield unexpected gains.
As a decisive person, Ye Wuya wasted no time. In a few breaths, he traversed several hundred meters.
Gradually, he caught a whiff of a foul stench in the air and slowed his pace.
Passing through a rocky gorge, he was greeted by a scene that finally eased his furrowed brow.
But after watching for two minutes, his joy faded.
Approaching the ruins, he saw hundreds of giant serpents spewing poisonous mist, their numbers swelling as they surged forth like an overwhelming flood.
From the forest came more beastly roars, and the earth shook. Fierce beasts of all kinds burst from the ruins; many were extinct species, and some he couldn’t name. Among them were several dinosaur-like monsters, towering over ten meters tall, rampaging from the depths like bulldozers, smashing trees in their wake.
“What happened here? Just moments ago, everything was fine—how did a beast tide suddenly erupt?”
Hidden atop a rocky forest peak, Ye Wuya watched as groups of monsters poured from the ruins.
Suddenly, the sky darkened.
Above, fierce birds and strange beasts gathered in great numbers, circling and swooping overhead. Even the smallest were over a meter long, while the largest spread their wings tens of meters wide.
A dense, black mass covered the heavens, blotting out the sun, as if storm clouds threatened to crush the city.
“What’s going on inside? Why are all these creatures fleeing? Is some super beast battling within, driving them out?”
Ye Wuya pondered the scene before him.
Glancing in other directions, he muttered, “Looks like this path is blocked. The endless beast tide—if my bloodshed provokes them further, things could get ugly.”
Resolute, he skirted the area, moving several kilometers away. His blue longsword carried him swiftly to the summit of a nearby mountain.
Having avoided the beast tide, he withdrew his sword aura and gently descended into the forest.
The woods were eerily silent, as if all the monsters had already fled. The dense ancient trees and thick undergrowth, which should have teemed with life, were quiet and still, devoid of any sound or sign of life.
Sword in hand, he parted the grass and passed through the zone of ancient, powerful vines and trees.
Soon, he entered the outskirts of another rocky forest.
“How vast is this place? So many ruins—could it be the site of an ancient kingdom?”
Ye Wuya gazed at the sprawling ruins, lost in thought.
After traveling several miles, the ruins seemed endless, stretching out infinitely.
“Hm? That foul stench again—much stronger than before!” Ye Wuya, standing behind a massive stone in the ruins, frowned and spoke to himself.
A hissing sound came from the ruins ahead—serpentine creatures slithering, as poisonous mist slowly enveloped the area.
Behind the boulder, Ye Wuya released a sheath of sword aura around himself, forming a protective membrane that kept the poison at bay.
These were instinctive actions; he hadn’t realized his sword aura could shield him like spiritual power.
Hidden in a corner, he watched as a head the size of a barrel crawled over the stone above—a giant vertical pupil sweeping the area.
Strangely, atop the snake’s flattened head was a small protrusion, like a horn struggling to break through.
Even more shocking, the giant serpent radiated the aura of spiritual power, possessing at least the strength of the Forming Realm or higher. It was, aside from the blue electric bird, the strongest beast Ye Wuya had encountered.
The serpent’s massive body slithered out, revealing a creature twenty meters long, presenting itself before Ye Wuya’s hidden gaze.
Just then—
Boom!
A thunderous roar echoed from deep within the ruins.
The sound was like a temple bell, but with a peculiar magic that stirred Ye Wuya’s inner desires.
